    What Is an Otoplasty?

    Last updated 6 months ago

An otoplasty is a type of cosmetic surgery that reshapes the ears. Many people are born with ears that protrude away from the head to a degree that is considered abnormal. As the individual grows, other people start to take notice. This can lead to severe teasing and bullying throughout a person’s childhood. Quite often, an otoplasty is performed when the child is about five or six years of age. However, an increasing number of adults are now having this cosmetic surgery to boost their self-confidence and self-image.

Watch this video to hear an interview with a cosmetic surgeon. He explains the otoplasty procedure and discusses the brief recovery period. You’ll also see some remarkable “before” and “after” pictures of individuals who have had this procedure.

To learn whether an otoplasty might be right for you, contact Meadows Surgical Arts at (706) 335-3555. Our cosmetic surgery team in Commerce also provides breast augmentation and rhinoplasty.

A Patient's Guide to Varicose Veins

    Last updated 6 months ago

If you’ve noticed the appearance of enlarged and twisted veins just under the surface of your skin, you have varicose veins. This common condition can be extremely embarrassing. However, varicose veins are more than just a cosmetic concern; they can also indicate a medical problem. If you have varicose veins, consult a cosmetic surgeon about your treatment options.

    Causes and Risk Factors

Varicose veins most often appear in the legs. This is because your veins lack a pumping mechanism to move blood up your legs. Instead, blood is propelled upward when the muscles in your legs contract. Blood is prevented from flowing backward with a series of valves in the veins. Varicose veins occur when there is a problem with these valves. This causes the accumulation of blood, creating an enlarged vein. There are numerous risk factors that can increase your chances of developing this cosmetic problem. You are at an increased risk if a family member has varicose veins, if you are overweight or obese, or if you sit for long periods at a time. Pregnancy also significantly increases the risk.

    Symptoms and Complications

In addition to the displeasing cosmetic appearance of varicose veins, they can sometimes cause symptoms such as discomfort and pain. Your legs may feel heavy or achy, or they may feel unusually tired. You might also notice persistent itching, swelling, changes in skin color, scaling, and inflammation. Having varicose veins increases your risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition in which a blood clot forms in the vein. If the blood clot breaks free, it can cause a life-threatening condition such as pulmonary embolism.

    Treatment Options

Fortunately, varicose veins are easily treated at a cosmetic surgeon’s office. Traditionally, invasive surgery was required to strip the veins out of the body. Now, cosmetic surgeons can employ a minimally invasive technique called endovenous laser therapy to seal the vein and prevent blood pooling.

At Meadows Surgical Arts, our cosmetic surgery team is pleased to offer minimally invasive endovenous therapy for varicose veins. Residents of the Commerce area who are concerned about varicose veins are encouraged to schedule a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon right away. You can connect with our cosmetic surgery practice by calling (706) 335-3555 or via our website.

A Brief Look at Laser Brown Spot Removal

    Last updated 6 months ago

You may not think of laser light as a treatment for damage caused by the sun, but laser brown spot removal is actually a highly effective procedure for the removal of unsightly moles, freckles, or sun spots. As the laser light penetrates the skin, it reaches deep layers where discoloration occurs. By scarring these cells, the laser creates a reaction in the skin that produces healthy new cells. Over time, the spots lighten in color, creating a more even tone in the skin. Treatment may target the skin of the face, hands, arms, or neck. You may get the results you want in a single treatment, or you can have repeated treatments to completely eliminate stubborn dark spots.

Meadows Surgical Arts offers laser brown spot removal in addition to a wide range of surgical and minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures in Commerce. To schedule an appointment for your non-surgical cosmetic skincare, call (706) 335-3555 or visit us online.

Simple Tips for Keeping Your Diabetes Under Control

    Last updated 7 months ago

Whether you suffer from type 1 or type 2 diabetes, it is important to take a proactive position in your health management to prevent common complications from these conditions. Without preventive measures, diabetes can lead to kidney disease, stroke, heart disease, glaucoma, and diabetic neuropathy. Each of these conditions can seriously diminish your quality of life, so you should take these healthy steps before any problems arise.

    Enjoy Whole Grains and Fruits

Your diet should be focused on foods with a low glycemic index. These foods will take longer to digest, keeping you full longer and helping to stabilize your blood sugar. If you frequently enjoy dishes like pasta or sandwiches, you should opt for whole grain options in your bread and pasta. Instead of drinking fruit juices, have a whole piece of fruit so that you get more fiber with the natural sugar of the fruit.

Get More Exercise Into Your Day

Staying physically active will be beneficial for your glucose levels and your weight management. If you think you do not have the time to dedicate to an exercise routine, get creative with your workouts. Do jumping jacks at your desk, take the stairs more often, or dance around the house as you do your daily chores.

    Visit Your Doctor Regularly

If you do not monitor your health, you may not know if your lifestyle choices are paying off. Therefore, you should see your primary care provider on a regular basis to check your blood sugar and other vital signs that could indicate potential complications with your diabetes.

    Limit Alcohol and Quit Smoking

Alcohol is problematic for patients with diabetes because it leads to blood sugar spikes. If you drink, you should cut back so that you only indulge on special occasions. You should quit smoking altogether, as cigarette smoking is a risk factor for many diabetes complications.

Meadows Surgical Arts provides primary care with diabetes management through our Northeast Georgia office, and we can help you stay healthy for life. To schedule an appointment with our nurse practitioner, Shannon Chatman, visit our website or call us at (706) 335-3555.
